Handcent is great, I like Chomp, it has the same features plus a cool blacklist feature to block SMS messages or hide them etc..

The word "messenger" keeps being used.  Are you guys talking about the icon to send text/pic/video messages?  I read that handcent slows down the device somewhat.  I think I will wait for the fix, as I like the default messaging set up.  I don't understand how it would prompt the IM Messenger though.  That thing is horrible btw.  I use Ebuddy to stay connected with my MSN Messenger, AOL Messenger and Facebook pals.  I've just given in for now and keep my Hero charged here at work.  I stream Pandora all day at my desk so it only made sense.  Thank sfor all the great suggestions though, guys.  Can't wait to see what the fix will possibly be.  I still love my Hero!

Edit*** Disregard the "messenger" comment.  I see it was messaging, and was reading it wrong.

Can someone tell me how do you set the phone to check for email 30 minutes to 1 hour at a time instead of constantly.  I know that pulls on the battery but I can't find where to adjust the setting for that.  Thanks.

Yes, SMS messages. Utilizing the native text messaging app evidently makes api calls to the dialing system thus keeping the cell awake. When you disable the native messaging notifications and use Chomp or Handcent instead, they apparently don't make api calls to the dialing system and therefor don't prevent the cell from 'sleeping' resulting in less battery (much less in my opionion) usage.

Go to the mail icon and press it. Then press the menu key then press more there will be a settings option there you can change the refresh notification and vibrate options.

I have it disbaled.  Just because I did not care for it.  I have a home screen with the message widget on it so I just use that.

I installed a Power Manager app yesterday, which works much like the one in Windows for laptops. When the phone is using AC power there is a profile for that. When the battery drops below a certain point, there is a profile for that. This morning when I got up, my battery was low and it had switched to the Battery Low Profile, which turns off Wifi.

I use it and I am sure it does consume more battery power but I receive a lot of texts and it's easier just to have them pop up on the screen and i reply right then. Typically, as I am replying a new one is coming in. I love just being able to "swipe" back and forth to view them and answering each one without having to open the actually application. This feature is worth the reduced battery power, which I hardly notice.

FYI on battery life...

My boyfriend has the samsung moment and read somewhere that they were having a problem not with battery life, but with the battery meter being incorrect.  The fix for that was draining it completely, but then turning it back on to make sure it was actually draining to 0.  I know that the batteries don't have a "memory" so to speak of, but i did the same thing for a couple days, and before i did this i could barely get through the WORK day without needing to plug it in.  I now can go all the way until i go to bed (at midnight or so) and it doesn't always exhaust it.  I might be using it a tiny bit less now that i've had it for a couple weeks, but i still am a big texter, and i stream pandora to and from work.

Hey everyone,
I'm coming to you after the 2.1 update. My battery life is terrible. I tracked it to day.
7:30- 100%
8:49am- 84%
9:20- 90%
10:32- 54%
10:52- 52%
11:56- 47%
1:41pm- 20%
1:43-17%
1:44- 14% (got alert to plug in my phone)

I plugged in my phone. Today I've already used the phone for internet. Probably 5 text messages received and 10 emails. I use Handcent, Gmail, regular mail for other counts on there, I used Advanced task killer to kill apps running behind and my battery life is like this. Any ideas? It shouldn't be like this following the update right?
