Ok I think I have lost my mind.

I can't figure out how to stop the notification sound when I receive a new gmail.  When I get mail from my other account I just get the icon in the notification bar and the green flashing light.  Which is what I want on gmail.  I went to setting s under my gmail and made sure the notification sound and vibrate where off.  I just habvemail notification on.  Just like my other pop account.

What am I missing its driving me nuts Huh?

Go into settings.  Make sure you have the Email notifications Checked.  Under that select ringtone should be set to Silent, and uncheck the vibrate box .  If you have done all that then I am at a loss.

thanks under settings  on my gmail account.

I have three choices: email notif, notification sound and notif vibrate.

I have email notif on, and the other two off, and it still gives me my notification chime every email.

The exact same setting on my other pop email and all I get is the pic of a letter in notification  bar up top.

Tested mine.  I have mine setup to give me a sound notification only.  Set the ringer to silent and never heard anything.  Message arrived without a ringer notification.  Set it back to "zing" ringer.  Got an email a few minutes later with the ringer notification.  All this was under the Gmail>Menu>Settings>Select Ringtone>Silent>Ok.  If that is not working I would contact HTC or Sprint for additional help.  Let us know how it goes.

Thanks got it not to ding.  But now I am getting two notifications and can see the email in two places one in the stock  mail section and one in a gmail type format.  I am getting two notifications also the @ for the gmail and the envelope for mail.  I am not receiving any mail on my other account.  I have my comcast email forwarded to my gmail.  So its only gmail mail comming in.  I just shut off the email  notification on the gmail account and see if I only get one now.

It may just come to me deleting my comcast account on my phone to see if that solves the issue.  I am sure its just some setting I am missing.  Its all trial and error, but thanks for the help. Its all new to me gmail, android, so I am learning.

Ceme,

When you get both notifications is it a comcast email coming into the device?  If that is the case, and since you have comcast forwarded, then yes you would get two notifications.  If it is a direct gmail coming in then you should not get the two notifications.  I have an AOL account setup on my device and the forwarded Outlook to my Gmail  I have not seen any problems with incorrect notifications.  Not to say something like that couldn't happen but occasionally you will get different quirks from similar devices.

Thanks for trying to help.

Yes my comcast is forwarded but I receive nothing in my comcast mailbox.  When I switch to it there is no emails there, on phone or pc at home.

I have not switched anything and its working fine I am just getting the @ symbol now.  I am not sure when I shut it  off and on they reset it or what.  But I am writing it off as just a quirk in the system since I changed my default mailbox.

So I do appreciate you trying to help.  The basic reason for me forwarding to gmail, as since gettign the phone I haven't been checking my mail on the computer much, and with my comcast, when I read or delete a mail from the phone my comcast mail box when I access it on a computer never reflects the mail being looked at so I then have to go thru 40 some emails and re delete.  So with gmail if I delete on phone its gone forever.  Makes it a little easier in my opinion.
