After changing my notification to one I dl'ed, I still always heard the default notication sound. Actually I heard the one I changed it to ONCE and only once, which was really weird. Even when switching the notification sound to a different standard notification sound that comes with the phone, the default one is still the one that plays.

What's going on? Is the phone just crappy? I seem to find a lot of annoying problems like this with the phone.

If you have a ringtone app or change the notification sound in the phone's main Settings, that changes the alert sounds for stuff like email, downloads, etc... which might be the "once and only once" you heard it. To change it for texts, you have to actually open up the Messages app and from All Messages, hit Menu > Settings and hit Select Sound near the bottom.
