New Hero owner since 10/16 afternoon (forum member as of this morning!), still lots to learn and customize on this phone...but very impressed so far!

QUESTION:
On my main (middle) home screen of my current customized Scene, I have the default large clock radio-style clock located on the upper half of the screen, with eight smaller icons on the lower half, such as Browser and Camera shortcuts.  Some of these small icons are one-touch speed-dial via the "Add-Shortcut-Person" feature.  The label for these shortcuts all default to "Call <contact name>".  Due to the small icon size, there is only room for ten letters before it abbreviates it.  Examples as shown on my phone:

"Call m & d" (all text displays; max. ten letters & spaces from what my own experience)
"Call Andr..." (cuts off "Andrew")

Is there a way to edit (independent of the actual Contact name) so the label simply displays "Andrew"?  I'd like to edit so that I could distinguish between cell and home speed-dial #s, such as:

"Andrew cl" (Andrew cell phone)
"Andrew hm" (Andrew home phone)

Maybe there's an App out there that will let me customize this way, but have not tried that path yet since there are so many to search thru.  Any advice/thoughts on my goal would be appreciated!

If you wanted to you could use a blank screen hold the screen>HTC widgets>people>style 1 or 2. Both of the styles will let you set a default to call and if you touch the person you will get options for them.

Ah, thanks!

But I see with this HTC widget*, there's only room for nine max (3x3 array) contacts, as opposed to sixteen of the smaller-style widgets I was using (4x4).  But the slightly larger icons* for the 3x3 array is easier to read.

But back to my original question, is there any way to edit the names shown on these shortcuts*, or would I have to edit my Contact names?

* BTW, apologies if I misuse any terms re: the Hero and Android system, such as widgets, icons, Scenes, etc...

You will have to rename them and I think the widget is like the bookmark one you can scroll through it

killa - thanks for the replies, looks like I can't have it all!

On the 3x3 widget, I eventually noticed the icons in the lower right corner of each contact - just a phone for a cell #, a little house for a home #, etc.  So it almost gets me where I hoped to go.

Maybe some dev will come up with something!

Found one - "Speed Dial", found by accident just now.  It creates 1x1 widgets that you can edit the displayed name as you wish, without actually editing the contact name itself.

Neat program - after downloading, long-press on any home screen, then Shortcut > Speed Dial.  Choose between:
1) dial immediately
2) place number in dialer
3) send sms/mms, or
4) send email

Then select the contact you want, though no search function for contact name (that I can find), so have to scroll thru list to select.  Then you edit the name to display on the widget, and you're done - the widget is now onscreen.

Note - you can't edit the display name once it's there, so you'd have to delete it and create a new one from scratch.  I also don't see where you can use a picture as the widget - only the standard one.

I hope this helps other out here!
