tap people in your apps folder or on your home page, select the contact you want to change, tap ringtone(it should have an arrow facing downward to the right of it and should say default under ringtone), if you have a complete action using choice here then select the com.htc.app...... now just select the ringtone and tap ok.
if you are wanting to use one that is music, go to your apps folder, tap music, the bottom left will have 3 horizontal lines, tap it, at the bottom tap the music symbol(this will put all your songs in alphabetical order), tap the song you want, when it starts playing hit your menu button, now select contact ringtone and select the contact you want.

when you set your ringtone, can you go back and look to see if it has a ringtone set for your contacts? does it have the ringtone you set on itor is it still saying default ringtone for the contact? you're trying to set a group ringtone?

got me then. maybe one of the smarter ones on here will have an idea. i even checked for a master setting and the one i thought i found does not override the individual contact settings. only thing i can suggest is ask someone that has the same phone to take a look at it. sometimes having hands on control of something rather than talking over the comp. or computer will allow someone to see something they didnt think of while talking. or, take it to the carrier you got it from. there could be a glitch in it.
by chance did you download any apps that control your ringtones? if so, maybe it has a setting in there that is overriding your phone.

The same thing happened to mine. Did everything as described here. Used to blame the old firmware but the 2.1 version made no difference. Same old default tone again!
Quite fed up with it. I gave up. Even my old Nokia never had trouble with this......
I regret getting the Hero since after one week I got it..........it is a lousy quirky phone!!!!
