Once you download applications for htc hero where are they Huh? I cannot seem to find them and use them.

They are in the screen when you press the arrow on the home screen you just have to look for them

When you've downloaded an app, the download progress shows up in your notification bar. When it is finished, you roll down said notification bar, click on the app download, and blam, you're using the new app.

You can also see your downloads in Marketplace-My Downloads. Nice to look here sometimes because you can see which apps have available updates.
