Has anyone else tried the 2.1 update for the Sprint Hero? Have you found that it does anything better or interesting that it didn't do before?
1. The search of phones info is nice. 2. The "Home" "Home" twice for the windows if different. Not sure how much I'll use it. 3. Same old lock screen. 4. Some new widgets. 5. Google maps. Added features. 6. Better Market look. That's it though. 7. We can get UrbanSpoon with 2.1 off Market. 8. Calendar has more features. 9. Clock is a little better. 10. Settings are different now. 11. More setting options for Camera. 12. The Security Screen is a touch different. Nice. But the same. You'll see. 13. LESS memory available from the begin. 14. NO option to install APPS on SD card. At least I haven't figured it out. 15. Web sites that require FLASH still don't work. 16. Does NOT seem any faster! 17. I did find the "Quick Contact" thing but haven't tried it much yet.
Other than that...... Pretty much the SAME just a little flashier. Nice but nothing to sing from a mountain top for......
Anyone else find anything?
Thanks, Marc

I haven't tried it, but the boyfriend is using the leaked 2.1 for the Moment. He noticed the camera is faster.
Have you tried Google Goggles? It's supposed to work with 2.1
It seems like there are definitely some differences in the update between the Hero and the Moment, but that's to be expected since most of the native apps Hero uses rely on the HTC Sense, not Android.

No, I haven't tried it. Haven't heard much about It. Will check It out. My daughter has the moment. Where is the 2.1 leaked version at? Might put it on her phone to compare.

So, after my boyfriend babbling on and on about how awesome his leaked update is (Moment) i decided to *finally* root my phone, and jump on this leaked 2.1 rom.
i am IN LOVE. mestenfelder says it doesn't seem much faster. The biggest push for me to do this was my phone seemed really sluggish lately. I'm a fan of apps, apps, and more apps, but it felt like my phone was getting hosed down. I really think 2.1 does a better job of managing tasks. I haven't put a task killer on yet so i don't know for sure, but not only is everything running quickly and smoothly, but even the screen rotation is almost immediate.
I haven't played with it too terribly much (trying to re-customize certain things AND having to work. blah! lol) but here are some of my comments on mestenfelder's observations:
2. The "Home" "Home" twice for the windows if different. Not sure how much I'll use it.
This is GENIUS!!! With 7 screens going from the home screen to the far left or far right was really annoying, i tried to keep everything i used the most on the screens closest, which sometimes made the feel of my home screens icky. Aesthetically, i can put anything wherever i want because instead of sliding all the way over, i hit home (from the main home screen, or home twice) and I see all my screens. LOVE!!
3. Same old lock screen.
Big let down, the Moment's new lock screen is sooooo cool.
4. Some new widgets.
The power setting widget is awesome. comment on another new widget coming up...
8. Calendar has more features.
I had to d/l a third party calendar app before this, bc I didn't like any of the widget options (HTC had two, Android had one). HTC added a new calendar widget that is EXACTLY what i wanted.
9. Clock is a little better.
Some cool new features with the clock.
10. Settings are different now.
Yeah, prettier!! With the icons they use in the menu, i think it's easier to figure out where you're going.
11. More setting options for Camera.
LOVE!!! And it's way faster.
13. LESS memory available from the begin.
Idk about that, but i do seem to be running high on the memory.
14. NO option to install APPS on SD card. At least I haven't figured it out.
Idk if it's built into the OS, i haven't played with it. but i know once the phone is rooted, you can partition the SD card.
I am soooo happy. One thing that sucked and worried me, is after I first flashed, it took the entire night to load my fb links. It didn't seem like it was doing it at all, but then when i woke up this morning it was all good.

Google Goggles is awesome!!! i do not have it, but i know someone with a Verizon Droid, it just visual searches, take a picture of something, PEPSI or any word, it will bring it up, i also read (of course it's blocked for privacy reasons) it has the ability to take a picture of a person, and if they have a myspace facebook or anywhere on the internet, Google Goggles will recognize it and bring it up, and i think that is cool, but i believe it's blocked out because of privacy issues.

Okay, a couple of things...
Is anyone else running this leaked update? My battery was really REALLY stellar before I flashed this, and now it's total crap.
On top of it, i wanna run my apps off my SD card but I have looked and looked and can't seem to find an easy guide online... What did YOU use?

werent two of the main points of this update to improve memory usage and the battery consumption? If the battery life sucks now and the memory improvement is debatable then wth did they do? other than make the settings prettier, of course!

Without getting into much detail, I can say that I absolutely love the update. I finally broke down and rooted my phone. It was well worth it.
I would say the best feature that I use it the turn by turn voice directions in google map. It has a few new features other that the navigation too.
Google goggles is cool but I don't use it much. My battery lasts much longer and there is a new widget that shows you where your battery usage is going.
The rom I am using has no lag. It is great!
Don't wait for Sprint to update your phone.

Yep, I agree! I rooted my phone yesterday and added a 2.1 rom. It is better in some ways but not much different in others. However, the wait is over for me, IDC if/when Sprint ever comes with the official update. One thing that I love is that the camera has much better color in auto now. I hated have to switch it each time I changed settings. Much more realistic colors, the brown haze is gone. I wish the setting for the camera would display in portrait and not just landscape.
I am going out to day for the sole reason of testing Google Navigation. I'm glad I rooted the phone because I found a root app that makes the text larger in all apps. Now, I can read everything without needing my glasses. Also added a cache cleaner app that cleans all at the same time not one by one. ROOTING is good.

Slaakker,
How did you root your phone? And which 2.1 Rom are you using? I would love some assistance with doing this and where to download. Let me know if you are willing to help.

I'm not Slaaker but here is the link to the directions to root your phone. All of the links are all basically the same, I used the last one. After saving the restore file (Step 10, I think), I switched to another source to add the rom. Root your phone link: http://www.htc-hero.com/htc-hero-tips-and-tricks/root-your-sprint-hero/To add the rom, I used the link in this post to download the exe file and ran it with my phone connected to the computer: http://www.htc-hero.com/htc-hero-updates-and-cupcakes/sprint-hero-2-1-leak-ruu-update/Also, might not be a bad idea to watch one of the You Tube videos on this topic. One thing that I learned is, if you are currently able to connect your phone to your computer and the computer recognizes it, you can skip adding the drivers, they are already on your computer. I wasted about 1/2 hour trying to figure that out. Good luck, hope it works for you.
