Picture messages

I noticed this about two weeks ago but figured it would just weed itself out. Whenever I get a picture message sent to my Hero, it says I need to download it. I try to and it just comes up empty or it says message was not able to be downloaded. I figured it might have been because of the Hancent application but when I try it with the default message system, it is the same thing. I've uninstalled Handcent and tried to do it that way but it still gives me the same problem. I have yet to reset the entire phone as I'm hoping I can get around it that way. My last resort would be to take it to a Sprint store. Anyone else having this problem or knows what I can do?

That's when it started happening to me as well. I thought the normal message service would still work with it but that's not the case.

back up your contacts to google, and try a soft reset, then hard reset if needed

I have my WiFi off still had the problem, so here's a follow up.   First off, make sure you know your gmail username and password (it's a pain in the a$$ to get help from Google if you do forget!)  In my case, if you try to backup your info with Sprint software, it seems that the phone sends it to gmail, wouldnt send it to my computer.  There is also an app that you can use to back up messages (wont save pic messages) "sms backup and restore".  You can try a soft reset but I had to do the hardreset.  After the hardreset, when I had a text with a pic, the pic showed and the problem was solved.  It took more time for me to reload my apps, wallpapers and ringtones, than to reset the phone.  Good luck.   

I had this problem with my first Hero and after several visits to the Sprint store they finally gave me a new phone, which I have now had for 3 months but alas this picture mail thing is happening again. Just says Download but will never download the pic. This issue is seriously frustrating, im not gonna do another reset on my phone and have to download all my apps again. thats annoying. I cant wait for the Supersonic to come out November 1st..or maybe this update to the Hero..its been a real letdown to me.
