I know this may sound insulting (not trying to) but is your WiFi turned on? I find usually if I have a problem with the phone the answer is the most obvious. If not go to menu, settings, wireless controls, and click turn WiFi on. Also under wireless controls goto WiFi settings and make sure network notification is checked.

Have you ever connected to WiFi before? If so, are teh networks you're trying to connect to in your phone listed as existing networks? I had a problem for a little while where existing networks wouldn't connect again until I "forgot" them and found them again.

The gsm version of the Hero does. The only thing I would know to tell you to try would be call your carrier. They'll probably want you to do a reset.
