I want to reset my Sprint Hero to back how it was when I got it. But my question is if I reset the phone would it effect my contacts that are stored in my gmail? I should just be able to export them back to the phone after its reset without any problems

Sync your contacts before you do the reset and it will be fine. When the phone resets your contacts will automatically re-sync.
