Just bought the HERO last Thursday and I am not a happy camper about the battery situation........it's absurd how fast it drains.

I'm afraid that the only sure fire way to increase battery life is to buy a extended life battery from a 3rd party manufacturer and if you check out the forums and blogs out there they put "Mugen Power" batteries at the top of their list because they simply work better than any other brand. I speak from experience; after buying a 3200 mAh Mugen Power battery for my Hero and following the instructions on how to condition it to maximize the power output I get three days of normal usage from it, four days of light usage, two days of heavy usage and one day of super heavy usage. I'm talking about 3 to 4 hours of wifi internet browsing, 2 to 3 hours of streaming music via bluetooth, about an hour of playing Raging Thunder 2 while simultaneously running the music player, about 2 hours worth of GPS activity via Google Maps and Co-pilot live and not forgetting phone calls, emailing and texting. The only downside is the size of the battery and the supplied door to house it, making the phone bulky but not even this bothers me - it means I'm finally free of constant charging and dead battery worries.

Yeah, the battery does go pretty quickly and I hope there comes a time when batteries are made to keep up with the functions of the average smartphone. However, that is currently not the case with these phones, it's not the case with most laptops, it's not the case with radar detectors, GPS devices, and many other things. The more things that we ask the phone to do the quicker the battery will drain. Sure, you can buy an extended battery and it will offer improved life but there is a cheaper option. You can search this site or other Android sites and find many suggestions for what one can do to extend battery life. Most of the advice includes, extending/turning off programs that automatically sync, turning off the GPS, turning down the screen brightness, and reducing the amount of time that the backlight stays on.
Again, I do agree that battery life leaves a lot to be desired but it is going to take the cellphone providers demanding better from their suppliers. This happened with the connector cord and Wifi. All connectors are going to be standard mirco USB and all phones (at least smartphones) will have Wifi. Sooner or later, batteries will improve too but for now, we have to make the adjustments to the phone and the adjustments are there.

I have found that using Task Manager, turning off my bluetooth when I'm not using it and turning off gps saved me some battery time. I also started using Handcent instead of the native messaging app. Works for me.

I have not had ANY issue with the battery. Glad I didn't let everyone's complaining about the battery keep me from buying this phone. Just use the task killer. Often. Battery is not an issue.

Battery life is bad, but it does depend on how you use it. Advanced Task Killer helps, but you have to kill apps every so often because they keep opening up on their own. Also, turn off wifi or anything else you're not using. If you can, try dimming the screen, although that's not very practical if you're texting a lot. With fairly heavy usage mine lasts about a day.
