I've had my hero for a month now and dust is starting to collect under the screen. Best Buy will not let me return it. I called htc warranty number and they said send it in, but i cant live without my phone for several weeks. I hate the dust! What to do?

I did this: From the very first day, I used black latex caulk (with a toothpick), and in the juncture between the top of the button pad, and base of the screen, and carefully filled it in. Then cleaned it off.
I just learned from experience.
Try this when you recieve your new phone.

Over at the Sprint HTC forum, at least one person stated that they were able to take their phone into a Sprint store and they were able to clean it out. Others have indicated some Sprint stores refuse to perform this service. Perhaps you should stop by your local Sprint store and see if they can clean it out but don't get your hopes up. Your other option is to call Sprint and explain your unhappiness. There is a chance they will get you another phone even though (I am guessing) you don't have insurance. Read up over on the Sprint forum because A LOT of people have this problem and getting another Hero might not be the solution.

I just noticed this in the last week. Apparently, a lot of people that have had this happen had their phones in their pockets. I'm pissed that something I paid so much money for had this happen, but the dust isn't that big of an issue for me yet, i'm just trying to keep any more from making it's way under there.

How can this phone get dust under the screen? Black Latex caulk??? Isn't this too drastic? I think this even voids the warranty...

Poor design, I suppose. We shouldn't have to do anything to keep dust from underneath the screen, especially black latex caulk.

I just noticed I have dust under my screen too! Is just a little bit, but I also had problems with my screen. It tried to answer a call right now and the screen started to wiggle on its own. It did not let me answer the call... I unlocked the phone with the Menu button but then it started to wiggle again! I had to remove the battery. Now it's working OK again... Do you know if the dust can cause this?

Another question... for a problem like this, do we need to pay something at Sprint? I have insurance but I know we have to pay for a lost or stollen phone like 100 bucks... if it is just malfunctioning, do they fix it for free or replace it?

I noticed the same thing on my hero a couple weeks ago. There are a couple minute specks of dust under the glass. But u absolutely can not see them when the screen is on so it doesnt bother me. Once I noticed it I was careful to keep the phone out of my pocket or bottom of my purse. And if I notice dust in the cracks around the screen I clean it immediately.

Guys, Im still having problems with my screen. Sprint (supposedly) opened my phone, cleaned the screen contacts and performed some tests and found nothing. But still sometimes the screen is just crazy. The problem is that this is an intermitent problem and my luck is so good that this happen when I'm at home... I had to take a video using my wife's phone to show them...

I'm going back to Sprint tomorrow (today is a holiday here) and ask them to replace the screen. Now, can they refuse to change it? Does the warranty/insurance cover this?

I'm still wondering if the dust can cause this...

I wold call Sprint and explain the problem to them and tell them that you don't want to deal with the store. I've had Sprint replace several phones for me and I've never had the insurance. Be nice but persistent.

Do they send you a new phone and then you send them yours? Or do you have to send them you phone first?

My boyfriend has also had free replacements by calling Sprint's customer service, and he never had to send in his phone first.  You should be fine.  Plus then you can port everything over before you send it back.

Sprint replaced my phone! They performed some new "tests" on it and figured out there was no way to fix it... Thanks for the info!
