HTC Hero received an Android 2.1 update last week, but it was not an official version. The smartphone finally got the official update and now you can use it for your phone without any risk. Unfortunately the update is not yet ready to be downloaded from Sprint's website, but there will probably be available this week. After you will get the update you will be able to enjoy those Google Maps Navigation new features and many other things.

This update will bring free turn-by-turn navigation to UK from Google Maps. The version could have been used on some Android 1.6 devices (such as Dell Mini 5 or Sony Ericsson X10) and numerous people have reported the new features work really well.
Version History

Current Version:
Software – 2.27.651.5
Firmware – 2.1 Eclair

It takes forever to download to pc. Is this the only way? Can we go to a Sprint store and get this. Will the contacts be erased on the update.

Not sure car guy. Do we have to have HTC Sync to download this? I tried it at work and it didn't update and one of my friends said I needed the HTC Sync so I"m downloading that but it's take FOREVER just to do that. Any ideas on a quicker way? I'm on hold with HTC to see if there is another way. I'll post if I find out.

Yes, it will wipe your phone clean.  Imagine the day you bought it, that is how it will be.  Just download My Backup http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-rerware-android-mybackup-jBnj.aspx and you will be able to restore your apps data.

Just downloaded it.  Man this is going to kill me, I won't be able to install it until Sunday night.  I've got my anniversary tomorrow, my daughter's dance rehearsal on Friday, the actual recital on Saturday morning, and a college graduation party for brother-in-law on Sunday. I could install it tonight, but then I'll get no sleep!  What to do, what to do?   Huh?

Ok so, the update from the Sprint site DOES work no problem! The HTC site failed me over and over, but Sprint's worked no prob. And it was WAY faster than the 20 or 30 min. in the instructions on the HTC site!

yeah I DL'd from Sprints site too and it was way faster than the 3 hours that the HTC website was asking for lol
Installed it on Windows 7 with no problems.
So far so good, nothing too different except for the new way of looking at all your screens.

One question though, any way to make the alarm a widget? I can make the clock a widget but on the 1.5 you could make the actual alarm a widget, so maybe im just looking in the wrong place, anyone knows if its possible?
